Early Ferrari road cars were built in very small numbers, usually to special customer order, with no attempt made at standardization. It wasn’t until 1954 when the Pinin Farina-designed 250 Europa debuted in Paris and would become the brand’s first true production model building the foundation for future Ferrari 250 models. The first series of 250 GTs included 82 cars built by Carrozzeria Boano. At the end of 1957, Mario Boano departed the company to set up the styling department at Fiat and his son-in-law, Ezio Ellena, took over with veteran partner Luciano Pollo. The renamed Ellena was the successor to the Boano car with three design changes including raising the roofline by 3 inches (referred to as “High Roof”), elimination of the driver/passenger vent window and an improved synchromesh transmission. In total, there were only 50 Ellena’s built under the Carrozzeria Ellena ownership. The first 10 were “Boano Style ’’ with the low roof and vent window and were commonly mistaken for a Boano. These were considered “transition cars’’ at the time the factory ownership transitioned from Carrozzeria Boano to Carrozzeria Ellena. Following the completion of these 10 “transition cars” 39 “High Roof Ellena’s’ ’ were manufactured all to the same specifications. In addition to the 5 available rear axle ratio options, there were only 2 other known options available for these 39 “High Roof” cars including 1) A dual brake master cylinder pedal box 2) vented/racing brake drums. The 250 GT was powered by the famed Colombo-designed V-12, which, with 240 hp, could propel the Ellena coupe to a top speed of 127–157 mph, depending upon the selected final drive gear ratio. Such performance is not surprising, as the mechanical specifications of the Ellena, including the engine, gearbox, rear axle, suspension, brakes, wheels, and tires, were the same as that of the 250 GT Tour de France, Ferrari’s then-current GT racing car. This beautiful example offered here for sale was completed on March 20th, 1958 at the factory and sold to its first owner Henry Gibson, a resident of New York,USA. This special Ferrari has a wonderful documented history from the beginning. The last owner purchased it in 2014 and would restore it to absolute perfection that you see here, winning multiple awards at some of the world’s most prestigious concours events. The restoration was completed in 2020 taking 3.5 years to complete with an extensive budget to produce an award-winning finish. Every nut and bolt was painstakingly restored to the highest level. Extreme attention to detail and thousands of hours spent to achieve what you see here today. Finished in the striking color combination of Azzurro Metallico accented with a Dark Blue roof and Pelle Rossa interior making this early Ferrari visually breathtaking. Utilizing extensive research beginning with numerous original factory documents and period publication pictures as well as in person inspections of 3 survivor Ellena’s of which 1000’s of pictures were taken to document and guide every detail of the restoration. Several restored cars were also inspected in person and referenced as needed - however highly scrutinized for correctness. Unlike many others, this example retains its numbers matching engine, gearbox, body, chassis, and differential. Adding to its rarity this example is believed to be the only example optioned with the dual brake master cylinder pedal box and vented/racing brake drums as specified in its factory build sheets. With its extreme originality and correctness this example was authenticated and has been awarded the coveted Red Book “Ferrari Classiche Certification ’’. This stunning Ellena was shown for the first time after the restoration at the 29th Annual Palm Beach Cavallino at the Breakers Hotel in 2020 where it achieved a Platinum level score. That same weekend it was on display at the 2020 Mar-a-Lago event and received 2 awards - “Excellence in Class” and “Most Elegant”. Later that day, this car was then photographed by Gunther Raupp for the Ferrari 2021 Calendar which was then designated as the February 2021 poster car. Also it was the cover car for Ferrari Market Letter, Volume 45 Number 6. In August of 2021 it was selected as one of the “Classiche Certified” Vintage Ferrari’s on display at the Casa Ferrari Event held at Pebble Beach Concours week. In February of 2022, this Ellena participated in the “Concourse at the Hills” event in Fountain Hills, Arizona and was voted by the FCA Club as the “Best V12 Ferrari”. That same year it was invited to be displayed at Pebble Beach Concours D’ Elegance in the M1 Class. In 2023, it was displayed at the Arizona Concours D’Elegance where it was awarded “Best In Class”. With very low production of the Ellena, there are only about 12 examples that are still complete with their original drivetrains in existence. This 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Ellena is hands down the finest example in the world having won multiple high-level awards for its restoration quality and authenticity, Ferrari Classiche certified, incredible colors and configuration. Included in the sale are owners manual pouch, tool roll, factory build sheet, Ferrari Classiche red book and Massini report.
